Suidae fossils from late Miocene deposits of Hasnot and Padhri, Jhelum, Punjab, Pakistan
Abstract
New suid fossils comprising upper and lower dentition were recovered from the Dhok Pathan Formation (late Miocene outcrops of Hasnot and Padhri) of the Siwalik Group in the Potwar Plateau of Pakistan. Most of the recovered material shows morphometric similarities with the Eurasian genera, Propotamochoerus and Hippopotamodon, and is allocated to Propotamochoerus hysudricus, Hippopotamodon sivalense, H. major, while a partial lower incisor is described as Tetraconodon magnus and some broken specimens are described as Suidae indet. These specimens add further data to the anatomical characteristics of these species, especially representing the first ever description of the upper third molar of H. major from the Siwaliks and incisor of Tetraconodon magnus.
Keywords: Propotamochoerus, Hippopotamodon, Tetraconodon, Siwaliks, Dhok Pathan Formation.
