Abstract

The present study aimed to establish conservation processes for the fossil mammal collection from the São José de Itaboraí Basin, housed at the Museum of Earth Sciences (Geological Survey of Brazil - SGB). This basin is one of the smallest sedimentary basins in Brazilian territory and is recognized as the cradle of several mammalian lineages. The collection catalog listed 1,979 specimens distributed among 2,875 registration numbers, but discrepancies were found regarding the quantity and identification of these fossils. Additionally, the items were organized by taxon, which made inventorying difficult. The specimens were reviewed and reorganized by registration number, and modern storage methods were adopted to ensure better preservation. The storage model and materials used allow for quick location, easy cleaning and handling, stabilization, and safety. By the end of the process, 5,145 specimens were identified in 3,546 records, all organized in ascending numerical order and in sequentially labeled boxes.
