Abstract

Isabelia and Isabelidinium: two tributes to two extraordinary women. Isabelia and Isabelidinium are genus names attributed respectively to an extant orchid and a fossil dinoflagellate. They were erected to honor two distinct but equally famous women: Princess Isabel (Brazil) and paleobotanist and palynologist Isabel Clifton Cookson (Australia). The genus Isabelia had been created in 1877, to honor Princess Isabel, but, in 1976, the same name was proposed to honor Isabel C. Cookson, which constituted a junior homonym. Upon realizing this mistake, the authors of the homonymy proposed the genus Isabelidinium for the fossil dinoflagellate in 1977.
